Since the pandemic started many people have taken a liking to build things as there was a shortage of workers for the official job. Everyone wants to build something or fix something in their house with respect to wood. Even if you don’t know anything about wood, looking at all these reels on social media websites you might feel that you should also carve or do something with carpentry.

Now there are a lot of things that you need to understand with respect to wood. This is because of the fact that there are so many different types of woods and you need to realise that it would not be easy to distinguish every single one of them. But, every single one of them has its own features and cannot be installed anywhere.

One such type of wood is RTD wood. It is also called exposure 1 wood and it is used extensively in carpentry. There are so many features that make RTD wood stand apart from any other type of wood. Let’s discuss everything with respect to this wood with the help of the question and answer format.

Related Questions To: What Is RTD Plywood

What is RTD wood?

Ans. Before we have gone to the serious questions as to how to use the same and how to install or where to install we need to understand what the material is and how it works. There are a number of things that can be said on RTX wood and you don’t need to worry about missing anything because all of it would be discussed in this answer.

Before we go on to the actual material let me tell you that RTD wood is made up of Exposure 1 materials. This means that RTD wood is designed for protection purposes. Now since RTD wood is designed for protection purposes, it is hard and very strong and can handle any type of environment.

Now if you have even one bit of knowledge about carpentry then you might know that initials written on a piece of wood define how good the piece is or what is the quality of the wood. However, RTD wood does not define its quality but rather what it is and what is its type. Many people compare RTD wood with respect to CDX wood. They say that RTD is a better version of the CDX.

RTD stands for resistance temperature detector. The wood type is not named by what the wood is but by its production process. RTD which stands for resistance temperature detector is actually a device that is used in the development of RTD plywood. This resistance temperature detector records the temperature which tells you as to what the temperature of the wood is while forming bonds.

This helps the workers who are working in the plywood production facility to make sure that they create the perfect type of bonding between different layers of plywood so that different types of microbes or dirt don’t seep in and it stays sturdy for a long time.

What is RTD plywood used for and where is it used?

Ans. Just like any other different type of plywood, RTD plywood also comes in different types and you need to make sure that you purchase the correct type or otherwise it would be a waste of money. Now to understand different types of RTD plywood you need to realise that they are named based on where they are used and what they do.

The two different types of RTD plywood are the Exterior rated panel and the Exposure one panel. Lastly, understand each of the two in detail.

The Exposure one panel is designed to withstand any type of moisture present in the surrounding. However, the Exposure one panel cannot withstand moisture for as long as 36 hours. This is because of the fact that it is designed to withstand moisture but not get wet constantly, so it is better not to use this type of plywood in places where there would be constant moisture. The exposed panel is also known as CDX wood.

When we talk about Exterior rated panels, this is a completely different class from the CDX wood. This is not some China-made wood that does not have a good quality of proofing inside. This type of food is called RTD wood. The speciality of RTD wood is that it is the best when it comes to moisture or water. Not even a single drop of water passes through this type of plywood so it is perfect for waterproofing areas.

What are the two different types of wood that are used in carpentry?

Ans. If you have ever seen plywood or if you have worked over the same, then you might have known that it is not recommended to keep the same in water or anywhere near water because it gets swollen and water goes inside the plywood.

Therefore, plywoods are designed into two types. The first type is the exterior type and the second type is the interior type. The exterior wood is designed to make sure that you fix them or use them outside and they are not so good looking but they are very sturdy and hard.

The interior type of wood is designed very beautifully because they are used inside your house, therefore, they can be painted or coloured too. But it cannot be used inside areas where there is moisture present or there is a water source nearby the wood.

So whenever you are installing plywoods in your house make sure that you realise the fact that you are differentiating between the interior and exterior types of wood because if you are not then you would attach any of those two, and switch their places which would destroy them.

What would be the difference between the two types and what should I choose between RTD and CDX?

Ans. See, what you need to understand is that the two types are used based on where you are installing the same. RTD or exterior type of wood is used in places where there is constant water pouring or somewhere where you want to have a lot of moisture in the area or in floorboards.

And when it comes to CDX or interior type of wood then they are used in cabinets drawers and in sub-flooring and they are very light but they look very beautiful and can be painted.
